Hakim Bukhari writes that when it comes to administering medications for children, the dosage should be "smaller and lighter" (Bukhari, 2024, p. 45) as their bodies are more sensitive. In his book, The Foundations of Unani Medicine, he gives us a detailed framework to work from. It is recorded in the following:

If the adult dose of the medication is 12 grams, the following is recommended:

  • Children under 2 years: 0.5g
  • Children aged 2-3 years: 1.5g
  • Children aged 3-4 years: 2g
  • Children aged 4-6 years: 3g
  • Children aged 6-10 years: 4g
  • Children aged 10-13 years: 5g
  • Teenagers aged 13-16 years: 6g
  • Teenagers aged 16-18 years: 8g
  • Young adults aged 18-21 years: 10g

From there on, the full dose is recommended.

NOTE: Even still, the dosage may be tweaked by the practitioner due to the severity & condition of the individual/child, the type of medicine, the season, etc. Read more about this in my article on The Laws of Administering Drugs (https://unanireads.com/the-laws-of-administering-drugs/).
