Unani Name: Shamar

Taste: Bitter, Sweet

Mizaj: Heating & Drying

Actions: Carminative, stimulant, diaphoretic, galactagogue, emmenagogue, aphrodisiac

Therapeutic uses: Nauseousness, amenorrhea, expectorant, secretion of breast milk, urine (good for kidney problems), sweat, etc. It is a corrective for griping caused by herbs like senna.

Dosage/Application:

  • Powdered added to water/milk
  • Infusion - after food to help digestion and secreting breast milk for mothers
  • Decoction - (seeds) stomach chills, colic, abdominal pains, (root) kidney stones, urinary problems
  • Tincture: digestive problems
  • Gargle/mouthwash: gum disorders, loose teeth, laryngitis, sore throats
  • Essential oil: total do 25 drops of fennel, thyme & eucalyptus oil in 25 ml sunflower/almond oil and rub on the chest for chest complaints
  • Chewed

*Caution: fennel is a uterine stimulant, so be mindful of large dosages during pregnancy.
