An 'arq' is the Unani word for distillation. Distillation is one of the most simple Unani medicine, yet the most popular and effective. Herbs, usually single herbs, are simply added to the water as if evaporated in the distillation set. As the vapor condenses and becomes liquid again, it carries with it the essence of the herb.

Kasni is the Unani word for chicory, so Arq Kasni is the water distillation with chicory root.

Chicory's mizaj/energetic is cold & dry. In addition, it has the medicinal actions of being diuretic and antipyretic. Arq Kasni is, therefore, hugely beneficial to those with dropsy, hepatitis, jaundice (1), fevers (caused by the liver), and other bilious complaints (2).

This formula has also been shown to be effective again ailments linked to a diseased liver, ailments such as decreased appetite, nausea, urinary tract infections, etc.

The reason behind its effectiveness is that as chicory is cooling, and so it reduces abnormal heat (inflammation) of a diseased liver. Chicory, as mentioned above, is also a diuretic and thus can flush toxins from the body. This opens doors for the liver to ease its burden and create space for its rejuvenation.
